Pitt Director of Athletics Heather Lyke Relieved of Duties

Athletic Director Heather Lyke will No Longer Lead the Athletic Department

The University of Pittsburgh is making a change at the top of its athletic department. Heather Lyke, who has served as athletic director for the past seven years, has been relieved of her duties.

The decision to part ways with Lyke was made by Pitt chancellor Patrick Gallagher. According to a statement from the university, the decision was made after a review of the athletic department's performance.

In her seven years at the helm, Lyke oversaw a period of significant change for Pitt athletics. She hired new coaches for the football, men's basketball, and women's basketball teams. She also oversaw the completion of several major capital projects, including the renovation of the Petersen Events Center and the construction of the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

Difficult Decision to Part Ways With Lyke

The decision to part ways with Lyke was not an easy one. She is a well-respected figure in the college athletics community, and she has a strong track record of success.

However, Pitt has struggled athletically in recent years. The football team has not had a winning season since 2019. The men's basketball team has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2016. And the women's basketball team has not won an ACC championship since 2015.

Gallagher: "This Was the Right Decision for Pitt Athletics"

In a statement, Gallagher said that the decision to part ways with Lyke was made after a "thorough review" of the athletic department. He said that he believes that this was the right decision for Pitt athletics.

"I want to thank Heather for her dedication and service to the University of Pittsburgh," Gallagher said. "She has been a tireless advocate for our student-athletes, and she has helped to make Pitt a more competitive athletic program."
